Colour of the year 2018 – Pantone loves purple
Announcing PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, PANTONE® Color of the Year 2018 – A dramatically provocative and thoughtful shade of purple.
The colour is said to express originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking. “Ingenuity and imagination are indispensable today,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Pantone 18-3838 Ultra-Violet, a blue-based Lilaton that brings color and creativity to a higher level, explores new technologies and galaxies, artistic expressions, and spiritual reflection the way to the future.”
Dark lilacs have long been a sign of counterculture, ineptitude and artistic brilliance, according to Pantone. With Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix, icons of music history have brought various tones of Ultra Violet as a personal expression of individuality into the center of Western pop culture. The color encourages one to imagine one’s own design of the world and to overcome boundaries with creativity.
The Pantone color of the year is now much more than just trends in the design world – it reflects what’s needed in today’s world,” said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “The color of the year is a snapshot that gives the trend and design world a strategic direction based on the work of the Pantone Color Institute for designers and brand owners throughout the year.”
